Infrastructure Projects for a Sustainable Future
The Adriatic Foundation believes that sustainability is not limited to natural resources — it also includes the spatial, social and emotional resources available to the community. In 2024, this philosophy was translated into one of the most significant infrastructure projects – the construction of a modern playground in Vareš, which today represents a symbol of joint work, trust and concern for future generations.
Born out of the local community’s need for a safe and functional gathering place, the new playground offers much more than recreation. It is a space where children develop motor and social skills, parents bond, and the entire community gains a sense of belonging. A special focus is placed on inclusivity, safety and longevity: the play structures are adapted to different ages, and the materials used are carefully selected for durability and environmental protection.
What makes this playground unique is the integration of solar technology: installed solar benches allow parents and visitors to rest, but also to charge mobile devices or access free Wi-Fi. This combination of infrastructure and sustainable technology reflects a modern approach to public spaces – spaces that are functional, smart and accessible to all.
The total value of the project was 110,340.30 BAM, and its realization would not have been possible without a strong partnership and synergy between the local government, the private sector and civil society:
- Donors (total): 87,866.35 BAM
- Adriatic Metals PLC: 15,736.50 BAM
- Adriatic Foundation: 6,736.95 BAM
This financial structure shows how a co-investment model can result in sustainable solutions that have a real, measurable and long-term impact on the quality of life in the community.
The reactions of parents, teachers and local government representatives confirm that this project goes beyond physical infrastructure – it has become a place of gathering, learning, healthy growth and shared pride. The playground has been in daily use since its opening, which further confirms the relevance of the project to the local context.
The Adriatic Foundation does not see this playground as the end of the project, but as a foundation for further initiatives that will promote physical activity, environmental awareness and a sense of community among children and young people. Programs that would include school sports days, health workshops and family weekend activities are already under consideration.
The playground in Vareš is more than a successfully completed project – it is proof that partnerships, when driven by a shared vision and responsibility, can create lasting change. Such infrastructure projects show that investing in shared spaces is not a luxury, but a necessity – and one of the most profitable investments in the social capital of a local community.
